Traffic Citation Options in Jefferson County

Jefferson County offers four ways to handle a traffic citation. The Circuit Court Clerk outlines each option on their website. You can appear in court, attend Drive Safe Louisville, complete KY State Traffic School, or pay the fine. Each choice has different effects on your driving record.

Drive Safe Louisville is unique to Jefferson County. The program is run by the Jefferson County Attorney's Office. It is the only option completed without a guilty plea or conviction. Participants pay an administrative fee of $199 for most cases. Excessive speeding tickets cost $279. You must finish the program 72 hours before your court date. Drivers under 18 must appear in court with a parent first.

KY State Traffic School is another option. You must still pay $134 in court costs plus the course fee. The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet runs this program. Visit drive.ky.gov for details. Paying a citation is the fourth option. Note that prepaying is equal to pleading guilty.
